Highly Anticipated M+ Museum of Visual Culture Finally Opens

Mark your calendars, folks! The highly anticipated M+ museum is set to open its doors on Friday, November 12th. Being a 65,000 square-meter building that’s home to 17,000 square meters of art, it’s viewed to be one of the largest museums of contemporary and modern visual culture. 

Sitting alongside Victoria Harbour at West Kowloon Cultural District, M+ is forecasted to be an international architectural icon situated among Hong Kong’s jaw-dropping skyscrapers. Well-renowned architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron teamed up with engineers from TFP Farrells and Arup to develop this concrete, glazed ceramic building that sways from the all too familiar glossy buildings across the city. M+ has been sustainably crafted to run efficiently – it’s a green building that emits low energy and low carbon. 

M+ welcomes you into 33 galleries that stun with 20th and 21st century visual art displayed in various mediums from around the world within an Asian context. From paintings and sculptures to installations, moving images and digital media, these works offer an expansive depth into culture and how it has transformed over time. The cultural dynamism challenges tradition, yet is pivotal to the shaping of the present into the future. 

Upon opening its doors, six thematic exhibitions host to different works will be showcased:

Hong Kong: Here and Beyond captures Hong Kong’s transformation from 1960 to present day.
M+ Sigg Collection: From Revolution to Globalization displays contemporary Chinese art from the 1970s into the 2000s.
Things, Spaces, Interactions touches on international architecture and design over the last 70 years and how it has affected our lives today.
Individuals, Networks, Expressions features post-war international visual art told from an Asian context.
Antony Gormley: Asian Field encapsulates Asia’s vast territory and population via tens of thousands of clay figurines created by reputed British sculptor Antony Gormley and 300 villagers from the Guangdong Province in a span of five days.
The Dream of the Museum speaks to the different elements and influences of conceptual art that stands with M+’s core existence.
